Practice History
Surgical Associates was founded in 1988 by Dr. John O'Brien when he assumed the surgical practice of the late Dr. Edward Wessel. Dr Brian Newman joined the practice in 1989. The practice moved to its present location in 1992. In June, 1993, Dr. Ronald Harris merged his long standing successful general surgical practice with Drs. O'Brien and Newman to complete the current Surgical Associates of Sussex County.

Dr. John G. O'Brien received his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree from Manhattan College and his Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University. Dr. O'Brien did his surgical residency in the U.S Navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. |

Dr. Ronald K. Harris received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Upsala College and his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Harris did his surgical residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City, N.Y. He began his surgical practice in 1978. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. |
Drs O'Brien, Newman and Harris belong to numerous surgical societies such as the Medical Society of New Jersey, Sussex County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the New Jersey Society of Surgeons and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
